He made his television debut as a contestant on KBS's Quiz Korea, making it all the way to the finals (but not winning). Joong Ki was doing his mandatory military service from August 27, 2013, to May 26, 2015. After his mandatory military service, he took on the lead role in the massive worldwide hit 2016 drama, 'Descendants of the Sun'. The drama was incredibly popular with the final episode recording a 38.8% viewership rating nationwide and 41.6% in the capital area according to Nielsen Korea. Joong Ki experienced a tremendous growth in his popularity throughout Asia and the drama established him as a top Hallyu star. It is confirmed that the second season for Descendants of the Sun would be released next year in 2017, focusing on Jin Goo and Kim Ji Won rather than the song-song couple.
